What happens when I pray in tongues?
When you speak in an unknown tongue, you are not speaking to people; you speak to God. (1 Cor. 14:2)
What is happening when that is going on?
Edification is taking place.
Mysteries are being revealed.
Things that you did not know from your own understanding are becoming known to you.
Imagine — God gave us the availability and the vehicle to be able to bypass the human intellect, to bypass what men think, to bypass our own understanding!
It's a wonderful thing to be able to pray out mysteries in the Spirit in other tongues!

Jude 20 Amplified, "But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith [make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], praying in the Holy Spirit."
1 Corinthians 2:9-10 Amplified, 9 But, on the contrary, as the Scripture says, What eye has not seen and ear has not heard and has not entered into the heart of man, [all that] God has prepared (made and keeps ready) for those who love Him [who hold Him in affectionate reverence, promptly obeying Him and gratefully recognizing the benefits He has bestowed]. 10 Yet to us God has unveiled and revealed them by and through His Spirit, for the [Holy] Spirit searches diligently, exploring and examining everything, even sounding the profound and bottomless things of God [the [b]divine counsels and things hidden and beyond man’s scrutiny].
